Traveling Light

Two weeks ago, we rejoiced at the threshold. Last week we practiced declining the world's invitations to reopen what it never closed. This week the camera turns gently inward, because not every old ache arrives by mail or media.

Some rise on their own. And they have curious timing: precisely at the threshold, precisely when you are about to step. An old grief clears its throat. An old fear finds its voice. This can feel like sabotage. It is closer to punctuality.

Consider what the Message actually says: "Let fear fall behind with each step." Which means fear was there, at the step, standing beside you. The Message is not surprised by this, and neither should we be. Thresholds summon what is unfinished, not to bar the way, but to ask, one last time, to be carried no further. What rises at your crossing has not come to stop you. It has come to be released.

So this week's practice is a blessing, not a battle.

The Threshold Blessing. Find an edge: a doorway, a porch step, the quiet end of a week. Sit there. Let what rises, rise, without argument. When it does, thank it. Whatever it is, it once kept watch over a younger you, and it took its post seriously. Then bless it, and set it down on the near side of the door. It does not need to cross with you. Nothing needs to cross with you except what Love is carrying.

And here is the joyful secret waiting on the far side: lighter is not emptier. Set down the extra bags, and you discover your hands, free now for railings, for gifts, for waving back at whoever is waving at you from the road ahead.
