Touched but Unsoiled - Divine Neutral State

Hi Reader

There’s something beautiful about rain on a lotus leaf.

The water gathers into little silver beads, and as they roll toward the edge, they carry away dust that has settled on the surface.

Watching this, it’s easy to see why the lotus has become such a beautiful companion for this month’s Message.

Touched but unsoiled.

I love the gentleness of that possibility.

Life touches us. A conversation stays with us. A headline stirs something. A kind word opens the heart. We feel these things because we are alive, connected, and capable of caring deeply.

And perhaps, like the lotus, we can allow an experience to touch us while remembering the wholeness that is already here.

We can feel what we feel… give it a little room… and allow it to move in its own time.

There is something deeply loving in that.

The Divine Neutral State invites us into a spaciousness where our sensitivity, our wisdom, and our peace can exist together.

From this place, we can care about the world. Speak with conviction. Take meaningful action. Stand beside someone who could use our support.

And as we do, we can remain connected to the love that inspired us to act.

Sometimes that connection comes easily. Sometimes we find our way back through a breath, a quiet moment, or a little kindness toward ourselves.

All of this belongs in the practice.

The lotus grows through the mud and opens toward the light. Both are part of its journey. Perhaps there is something here for us, too… a way of moving through life that allows our experiences to nourish our growth while leaving room for the heart to keep opening.

This month, I’ve been calling our simple practice The Bead. An invitation to explore, whenever it feels helpful.

One: allow the moment to arrive.

When something touches us today—a comment, a compliment, a piece of news, or a moment of silence—we can pause for one gentle breath.

Perhaps quietly say, touched.

Notice where the experience is felt. The chest, the jaw, the belly… wherever awareness naturally goes.

For this breath, simply make room for what is here.

Two: allow a little space.

With the next breath, imagine a small bead of water resting on a lotus leaf.

A complete little drop, held lightly on the surface.

Perhaps the words are, free to move.

And perhaps something softens as we allow the breath to come and go.

Three: allow the movement.

Imagine the bead beginning to roll, carrying a little dust with it.

Then take a moment to notice.

There may be a softening, a fresh perspective, or a little more room around the feeling. Something may still be asking for our attention. We can listen and allow the next step to become clear.

Sometimes a moment like this helps us recognize an old expectation we are ready to loosen. One of those “whens” we explored last week:

I’ll feel peaceful when…

Simply recognizing it can open a little space for peace to be welcome here, too.

At the end of the day, perhaps take a quiet moment to appreciate whatever shifted, however gently.

And whatever still feels tender can be met with the same patience and love we would offer someone dear to us.

If the calligraphy is part of your practice, let it be a gentle reminder throughout the day:

Touched but unsoiled.

A breath.

A little space.

And room for love to guide what comes next.

With love and gratitude,

Jeff
