Promises Made Are Kept

The last Friday of the month, and the last step of this particular crossing. Time to keep a promise.

First, a closer look at old wounds, since we have spent the month learning to leave them behind. Look closely at almost any of them and you will find, underneath, a broken promise. Someone promised safety and it slipped. Someone promised to stay and did not.

The world promised fairness, then apparently lost the paperwork. This is why old wounds reopen so easily: we keep returning to audit the account, checking whether we are still owed.

The Message closes the audit in seven words: "Promises have been made and promises made are kept."

Not, perhaps, every promise made by every person. People are beloved and unfinished, and their promises sometimes are too. The Message speaks of the Promise beneath those: the one made by Love itself, older than any disappointment filed against it. That every transition has a purpose. That every step is surrounded. That the journey can be trusted, not because it is painless, but because it is accompanied.

On the first Friday of this month, a line was planted here: somewhere ahead of you, a promise is already being kept.

Now it can explain itself. The promise was never waiting at the finish line, arms crossed, checking its watch. It was being kept the entire way. Kept at the first threshold, when you named your transition and greeted it. Kept when you declined the world's invitations backward. Kept at the doorway where you set the old bags down. Four Fridays, four steps, and you were met at every single one. The month you just walked is the Message in miniature: promises made, promises kept.

So rejoice. Not because transition costs nothing, but because it carries everything that matters across, and nothing that matters is ever carried alone.
