Divine Purification: Clearing the Glass

Hi Reader

This month, we step into Divine Purification.

There is a particular quality to this message. It does not announce itself with thunder. Purification rarely does. It works the way clean glass works.

Anyone who wears eyeglasses knows the moment exactly. You take them off, breathe on the lenses, wipe them, slide them back on, and the world snaps into a sharpness you had quietly forgotten was possible. Leaves have edges again. Faces have detail. Light behaves like light. And underneath the relief, there is a small, strange ache, because you realize you have been looking through that film for days, maybe weeks, and never once noticed. You stopped seeing the smudge and started calling it the world. It became normal, the way most things we stop noticing become normal. The blur never announced itself either. It simply, slowly, became what you expected to see.

That is the state Divine Purification meets...the quiet accumulation of film over the lens of a life, and the soft astonishment when it lifts. *How long was that there?* you think. *What else have I been looking straight past?*

Divine Purification, when awakened, offers exactly this kind of clearing.

It can be turned toward congested thoughts, toward the energy of what we eat and drink, toward the space around us and the space within.

For those of you who walk a spiritual path, and I know that is most of you, it asks for no allegiance and competes with no practice. It accompanies. It deepens. It can sit beside your prayer, your chant, your sitting, and quietly wipe the lens.

For those who hold the calligraphy: you know that it rests in two states, passive and awakened, and that there is a threshold between them. This month is an invitation to cross it. Awaken the message. Ask it, in your own words, to serve you in this way, to purify your thoughts, your nourishment, your rooms, your self. I won't tell you how to awaken it. Those of you who know, know, and those who wish to learn need only ask. What I will say is that the calligraphy responds to being asked. Most things worth keeping company with do.

Over the coming weeks, I'll write to you about the domains this message touches: the mind first, then what we take in, then the spaces we move through, and finally the strange and lovely turn where purification stops being something we do and becomes something we allow. There is a maturation in this. We begin by scrubbing. We end by being washed.

For now, simply notice the glass. Notice that you have been looking through it this whole time.

Be well and stay well
