An Invitation You May Decline

Last week we crossed into the month of Divine Transition, rejoicing recommended. This week, a practical matter, because somewhere between last Friday and this one, the world almost certainly tried to hand you something old.

It does this daily. Not out of malice, exactly. There is simply an economy that runs on stirred embers. The headline that knows precisely which year to mention. The feed that remembers your bruises better than your birthday. The acquaintance with a gift for raising exactly the thing you had finally set down. The world is remarkably well informed about your old wounds, and remarkably generous with reminders.

Here is the quiet truth all that noise depends on your forgetting: a reminder is an invitation, not a summons. The press arrives from outside. The reopening requires your signature. Nothing old resumes aching in you without your RSVP.

So this week's practice is the art of the gracious decline.

One: notice the tug, and name it. "Ah. An invitation.", because invitations, unlike summonses, imply a choice.

Two: ask the doorkeeper's question. Does picking this up carry me toward my next step, or back into a room I have already left? Be honest. Even a true thing, handed to you as a hook, is still a hook.

Three: send your regrets. With actual grace. Bless the messenger, decline the message, and keep walking. You are allowed to wish the band well without rejoining the tour.

One clarity, so the practice stays honest: declining is not denial. Some things deserve a real reckoning, and truth is always welcome at the door. But reckoning and reopening are different verbs. One examines in order to move. The other circles in order to stay. The doorkeeper's question can tell them apart every time.

Let fear fall behind with each step. It cannot follow where it is not invited.
