Hi Reader
Somewhere in an orchestra, a percussionist is waiting to play a single note.
There may be a hundred bars of music before her moment arrives. And through all of them, she is listening. Following the rhythm. Hearing how everything fits together.
Her pause is part of the music.
I love this image because it helps explain something beautiful about the space between our thoughts.
The mind has so much to say. Thoughts, opinions, memories, plans… one flowing into the next. And when we are caught up in that activity, a single thought can feel like the whole truth.
A little space allows us to hear more.
The Message reminds us that, in the space between, “we can be more objective.” We can sense the bigger picture.
A feeling becomes easier to understand. A situation reveals another possibility. Our next step becomes clearer.
And we can bring that clarity right back into life.
Like the percussionist, we remain present and involved. The pause helps us return to a conversation with more kindness, approach a decision with greater understanding, or give a feeling a little room to be heard.
This is the invitation for our second practice this month.
Hearing the Room
- When the mind is busy, allow a thought to finish. Take a gentle breath.
- Listen for the farthest sound that reaches your ears. Then notice a sound nearby.
- Rest in listening for a few moments. Feel the space around the sounds, and then gently return to whatever comes next.
Ten seconds may be enough.
A small pause. A wider view. A little more room to respond with love.
We can practice this in the middle of an ordinary day. Before answering a message. During a conversation. Sitting quietly with a cup of tea.
The music continues, and we begin to hear more of it.
With love,
Jeff
